The following reflection was shared by John Vornholt, Director of Asset Services, and is a representation of our team’s commitment to the RockStep Way.
Being Positive. The ultimate test of cerebral fitness. A real grind every day to overcome the unrelenting negativity that society can bestow upon us from every conceivable direction. “Be positive” is the mental mindsight that makes all of the other RockSteps possible. Without it comes a lack of mental energy, desire and willingness to persevere your way through a successful day.
Win the morning, Win the Day:
For me, it all starts very early in the morning every single day, day after day, no alarm clock necessary. I know I am going to win the first few hours of my day and I can’t wait to get started. The win I have created for myself is through running and I challenge you to find your own. Rain or shine, in sickness and in health, first thing every morning I am out the door for a run. It is during this time that I clear my head from everything I have encountered the day before and I start to create a positive inner dialogue within myself that is going to allow me to take on all of my goals and challenges I have for the coming day. I try to ride this wave of mental positive energy throughout my day to keep myself from being distracted by pressure to do things that have little to do with what’s truly important to me.
I know that once my day starts the battle is on. That first glance at my phone, the first news story I hear, the first review of my morning emails—I am in that battle. It is at that time when I channel my morning win. By the time my workday starts I am locked in, RockStepped and ready to roll with a positive mindset guiding me towards a successful day.
“Win something in the morning and carry that mindset throughout the day. Wake up in the morning and check your phone and read bad news, a bad email or a bad tweet and you carry that defeat, that negative energy throughout the day. Overcome that with a morning win. Be ready for life.”
